Interestingly, IMDb has this to say about this car:

The first scene of "Finding Neverland", is set in 1903, the opening night of James Barrie's play "Little Mary". The vehicle in which Mr & Mrs Snow arrive is a Rolls-Royce model 40/50 HP, also known as a "Silver Ghost". This is an anachronism. The Rolls-Royce company was formed in 1904, with production of the 40/50 HP started in 1907. Moreover, the car has a "Flying Lady" mascot on the radiator which was not designed by Charles Sykes until 1911. The specific car is identifiable from its registration number - BM 8794. It is chassis number 1979, which was delivered new on 10th May 1912.

Meanwhile, DVLA ascribes the plate to a 1921 (not 1912) RR.

I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just amused. :)

humungus wrote BM 8794 .... chassis number 1979, which was delivered new on 10 May 1912. Meanwhile, DVLA ascribes the plate to a 1921 (not 1912) RR.

BM 8794 plate was issued by Bedford County Council in 1920 (info from book, not DVLA). DVLA often has a problem with plates originating before 1921-23 - not necessarily their fault as before then local councils issued plates within their own systems without much central definition of what records and details were required. From 1921 DVLA's predecessor started creating a national database by hoovering up all the local records, which in some cases were too chaotic to pin down. Result - in some cases the original registration dates survived through to the DVLA record, in others a default date was applied for the start of centralisation (usually 1921-23, depending when the individual record was processed), and the original date lost from the record. So many cars from 1903 onwards when first regs issued have 1921-23 "dates". Which possibly explains why DVLA says what it does in this case.

But possibly another twist in play here. If it is a 1912 car as claimed (which seems believable if chassis info is solid), it may originally have been reg'd with a special number, then in 1920 sold on by Lord Double-Barrelled-and-Barely-Sensible to a new owner, with His Lordness keeping his special number for his next luxo-barge. So new owner had to get another number issued for his now 8-year old pride and joy.

It would be interesting to know how the local offices did this. These days the new car is given a new registration number when it is first available for sale. If you have a personal plate, as I do, your plate is then put into the records and on the car, and the original issue remains in abeyance, to be put back on the car when you sell it. Your personal plate is then available for your next car.

The initials that appear on my plate are not jfs, by the way!

Many thanks, jfs & dsl! Very illuminating.

automobileweb2 did open for me and I somehow managed to come to
this page which sports the same photo and has this to say about BM-8794:

Puis le chassis n° 1979 [96A] (datant de 1912 et qui sera recarrossée en 1992 en Tourer par Rippon, voir par ailleurs...). Contrairement aux autres modèles de cette page, la reconstruction de cette voiture a été effectuée par Jarvis en 1965. A l'origine, la voiture était carrossée en Cabriolet par Barker et vendue à Bilton Pollard, de Londres.
On voit encore (photos couleur, la bleue marine) la même voiture (BM-8794)...
