Mercedes Benz SSK

Although it looks like a Merc SSK, it is built on an AC (Shelby) Cobra chassis (and was, apparently, an absolute pig to drive). In the late 80's or early 90's it was rebodied as a Cobra.

They must have stretched the chassis from an AC?

I wonder if Tony Curtis' car was built on an AC chassis too? It would make sense to keep similar models during film production and it's another car that came in for a hammering during filming so unlikely to be 50 years old!

Surely it should be listed something like "Mercedes Benz SSK Replica (made for movie) AC (Shelby) Cobra chassis"?

I do not know how it should be listed. When the base is sure, we usually used the base name, e.g. the GMC truck in Raiders of the Lost Ark, or the Corvette-based Cadillac

No problem :)

........perhaps just add "Mercedes Benz SSK Replica" in 'Extra Information' then?

I ojbect to this damn thing being listed as AC Cobra. Such a listing makes us look like a bunch of idiots. It should probably be 'made for movie'. Extra information that we are SURE of could be included - chassis, look alike, replica, etc.

I don't mind listing highly modified cars according to the original body/chassis providing they are still somewhat recognizable but this listing is just ridiculous.

Even the current listing is problematical because there was no AC Cobra Chassis. The chassis was AC. The completed car was Shelby American Cobra. I know people call them AC Cobras but as a matter of fact there was ofically no such thing.

If we insist on going this route then there are a lot of dune buggies that will have to be listed as type 1 VW - think about it.

Well, I agree with your arguments too... I do not know what is the best solution.

We should definitely call it
Make : Made for Movie
Model : Mercedes-Benz SSK Replica
Extra info : based on AC Ace chassis

Wrenchhead is absolutely right, everything else is nonsense.

The same approach should be taken for the 'Raiders' truck.

The 'Corvorado' should be named 'Dunham Corvorado'.

Acceptable is the Miami Vice Daytona Spider, as it is widely/wrongly recognised as a Ferrari.

Since it's now being listed as based on an AC Ace chassis, and the film is a British production, why not change the flag of origin to the Union Flag? :)

[added later] Thanks :)

I think its a replica of a Mercedes Benz SSK by Gazelle /vehicle_127087-Mercedes-Benz-SSK-Gazelle-Replica.html

But somebody (I presume an actual expert) has already said it is made for movie on an AC Cobra chassis. The Gazelle was built on a Volkswagen Beetle and this is much too big.

Just to throw a little more oil on the fire, I remember seeing a Cobra advertised by Rod Leach's Nostalgia (a well respected Cobra expert) that was described as being the Gert Frobe SSK that had been rebuilt with a correct body etc after the movie was completed.

At the time he was quoting chassis/engine numbers and said he could provide documentary evidence from the movie production company on the provenance of the car.

This was around 20 years ago so my memory isn't 100% but it was an AC built Cobra chassis fitted with the correct 427 engine, whether or not it ever saw the inside of Shelby's production facility is a different matter.......
