Reasonably long sequence, but fairly ordinary content. This A55 van is probably as good as it gets. Taxi in thumb has dark red wheel paint - anyone know if this meant anything as I can sort-of-remember a few similar when I was a young'un??

Purely speculation, but probably one of the large taxi operators who outsourced his wheel and tyre supplies from a tyre manufacturer, who painted the wheels for easy recognition. A lot of the bus operators did this, owned lots of buses but no wheels or tyres, which they leased. Remember reading somewhere about a would be bus preservationist making an offer for a bus and being told he would have to supply his own wheels and tyres.

Interesting. Seems a strange arrangement - who benefits and how?

Operator benefits because he gets rid of nausea of changing tyres on rims and will have stockpile of good tyres on rims ready to cover the odd puncture or blowout with minimum down time. Tyre supplier will be expected to pass on economies of scale to a certain extent, but will have predictable cash flow and can fit making/purchasing programmes to suit his production requirements. He will also be kitted up to change tyre and maintain wheel assemblies in the most efficient manner. Win/win if the pricing is negotiated correctly. The other point is that buses and taxis would have remained in service during the life of several sets of tyres, the operator passing the responsibility for assuring legality and safety as part of the contract ts and cs.

I have been retired nearly nine years but can still recall the jargon. Once a commercial manager always a commercial manager.
