Charlesworth mostly built saloons on Alvis chassis- the most hansom touring bodies were by Vanden Plas. That company were best known for their sleek tourers- less well protected from the weather than this drophead coupe, but smarter in the open condition- the heavy hood of this one is hard to stow neatly. For all that, it's a very fine car, and would have cost about £850 new- expensive, but not much more than half the price of a Bentley. This scenario is a bit contrived. If in 1938 you purchased a dashing supercar like this it's not likely you would have hired a chauffeur to do the driving. Certainly the hired hand has by far the best deal here- one of the finest road- cars to drive in comfort whilst the passengers are both huddled up in the back. I'm surprised David Suchet in his Poirot role could actually clamber in there at all!
