Animatronixx ◊ 2008-02-11 19:16	You already guessed it: The conversion was made for the movie and they just did it once. When you see that scene in the movie, you´ll notice that the picture freezes for a few seconds. People often ask themselves: "WHY did they do that instead of just showing the car falling down continuously? What the hell might be the purpose of that freezed image?" The simple answer: It was an incident which occured due to a technical failure of one of the cameras (they were all linked to one another). As they only had one Jaguar hearse, they couldn´t do another shot of the Jag falling down the cliff. That´s why they had to leave this slightly injured scene in the film - being lucky that the cameras had not completely ceased recording at that moment. -- Last edit: 2008-02-12 02:03:07

fleetwood75 ◊ 2011-05-30 04:43	I'm not sure if power windows were optional on the '71 XKE because when it shows Bud Cort rolling down the window to stick his head out, It looks like this Jag has power windows, Maybe they were custom fitted to this car or maybe the window cranks on the XKE are so smooth in operation, That it makes it seem like this Jag has power windows, I couldn't see any movements inside that suggest turning a hand crank, So this Jag definitely has power windows it looks like.

dsl ◊ 2014-08-31 23:14	I think this is an S1 - none of the small lights and sidemarkers are same as genuine S2. Front bumper is probably genuine S2 but rear looks like S1 front with US chromed oval. S2 should have chrome caps on doors, although maybe these would clash with chrome strip so not diagnostic in this case. Also headlamps look like mid-67 onwards S1 uncovered, without extended chromed S2 housing. Also wondering what it was for - small kids or pets only?? Hearse bay too short for proper coffins. Despite all the tacky chrome and the clashes between curves and straight edges, it does look quite neat ....

starbux ◊ 2015-10-22 09:03	@dsl I'm not quite sure this is a series 1 or 1.5. You are correct the markers are not correct for the series 2 entirely. But this car dos have the wide mouth grill of the series 2 with oval emblem on the center bar. All series 1 and 1.5 had the short mouth were the metal is folded inward with all of the markers of the series 1 with the exception that he series 1.5 had the headlamps uncovered. However series 2 and 3 had the headlamps slightly raised a bit with added bezel treatment. All of the series 1's have the signal lamps above the bumper and the series 2 have them below. I do agree they modified the lights a bit. The lower front marker lights are narrower than the standard series 2. And he the rear lights conform to the sides more. If this is a series 1 it used a modified series 2 bonnet. It is possible this may have been a donor car from jaguar when they were doing initial prototyping. I work in film and this has and is a common practice. Another reason I think iris a series 2 is that it looks like it has the 2's higher windshield with 2 longer wipers instead of 3 small ones. The windshield is larger indicating a series 2. On the series 1 the only car with a higher windshield were the 2+2's. This was done to make them the perspective to be more proportional. I think they used the same height windshield in all models during the series 2 run. This car was not 2+2 as the the door is shorter indicating it was either a coupe or roadster. IMO this mod would be easier to accomplish with a roadster In the he sense that you would not have to cut and shape as much metal. One odd thing is that they used the series 1 bullet style mirror for the driver. They put the mirror on the bonnet which I believe was only done on the 61 and early 62's. The series 2's hVe the mirror on the door. Non the less it is an odd duck of the bunch.
dsl ◊ 2015-10-22 14:30	@starbux. Interesting stuff. Noted that the driver mirror is on the bulkhead (not the bonnet itself) and is not a bullet mirror. Also that it does have the 3-windscreen wiper format of the S1, but intrigued by your comments about windscreen height. The S3 has higher screen but are you sure that normal (not 2+2) S2 did?? If so that's a change I had not realised. Not sure if this has the higher screen, although if it does I can imagine this was a deliberate feature to give a more balanced outline for the extended roof. However the other consequence if they fitted a higher windscreen is to work out what they did with the door frames to match the greater roof height. These are short (non-2+2) doors so the windows and frames would have to be custom-built. Agree S2 bonnet. Because of the S1 format wipers (which would require a bulkhead change so is major engineering rather than panel swapping) and lack of side markers, I think this can be explained as an S1 or S1.5 with an S2 bonnet swap and maybe the windscreen of a 2+2. Whichever way we throw it around, it's a hybrid of elements so is an incomplete match for S1 or S2. If there has been a bonnet swap from an S2, the distinction between S1 and S1.5 no longer applies, so S1 may be more appropriate than S1.5. However am not convinced wheels have triple spinners of early S1 although difficult to be definite except in the final crashed thumb which look double, so maybe 65+ S1 4.2 is as good as it can get.

Of course looking at the pictures it's hard tell what's going since it's a black car and these are most likely snaps from the low resolution video. I agree I see the mirror is in the spot where they placed it on the S1's. Some 1.5 s had it on there as well. I think most 1.5s have mirrors on the door. Some models on both sides probably an option at the time. The bumpers look S2 with the ones in the rear seem to be the 2+2 longer ones. The bonnet does sort of resemble a series one maybe it's possible it went to the chopping tool. It has the S 2 bar. The S1and1.5 have the eared knockoffs. The ugly shot lobe bolt looking ones appeared in the series 2's. It is possible they ended up on some S1.5's. The problem with later gen Series 1.5's was that they kept evolving to meet US standards. So the car kept changing until they finally went to Series 2 raising the headlights a bit and adding larger mouth to aid in cooling and induction to support the smog equipment and the crappy lower output Zenith Strombergs. I am pretty convinced that the windshield is a 2+2's not only 2+2 windshield longer it has a slightly shallower angle it stands up a bit more straight. Not as sleek looking. It's been a while since I have been around these cars. I used to restore them with my dad. I fixed a 62 3.8 coupe that was in a front end accident that had ran into a ditch. We restored his 67 OTS and partially restored a 74 S3, 2+2, that was a real pain. I suppose it's possible this car might have been donor S1 wreck that they chopped and pasted together all of the dressing to make it a hearse. It is interesting though that someone did this. I saw internet that someone made a hearse out of an XK8 paying homage to this car I suppose.

JMMaza ◊ 2017-09-02 16:24	Hi there, The hearse in the movie is definitely a S1.5 2-seater FHC, which is attested by: - The windscreen and the chrome screen side finishers wich are different from those of a DHC and the chrome frames and finishers of the windows which don't exist on a DHC (I do have one as well as a S3 V12 FHC), - the place of the external mirror. The grey OTS shown before transformation has its mirror on the door: https://fr.pinterest.com/pin/342836590375801335/ - The rear end and bumpers with an Amco bar - The lack of headrests The only visible changes are: - the cutting of the roof to make it flatter https://fr.pinterest.com/pin/342836590375801730/ - the replacement of rear lamps above the bumpers with side indicators and unidentified ones (probably from another car from the same period) under the bumpers to fit with the hearse shape. - the replacement of the bonnet by a S2 one to fit with the grey DHC one. Otherwise : - It's the S1/S1.5 2-seater FHC short base with the lower windshield and 3 wipers - The transformation should have been limited to what was visible on screen and we can make out on a few front close-ups and 3 quarter rear views that it was probably made with plywood over a wood frame. - The interior was black.
