Bond steals needs a car to follow Scaramanga, so he steals an AMC Hornet from a car showroom with Sheriff JW Pepper (from the previous Bond film Let and Live Die) inside.

[Image: tmwtgghornet3lj4.1558.jpg] [Image: tmwtgghornet4im5.9510.jpg] [Image: tmwtgghornet6.jpg]

They come to a river and find that Scaramanga's car on the other side. The nearest bridge is 2 miles back, but Bond finds a quicker way to get across...

Pepper: You're not thinkin' of...
Bond: I sure am, boy! Ever heard of Evel Knievel?

Pepper: Woww-eee!! I ain't never done that before!
Bond: Neither have I, actually.

This car deserves 4 stars

This Bondfilm was obviously sponsored by AMC. Cragar rims make this Hornet stand out.

Just to comment on Callhan's remark, the only reason that the AMC was used in the film was that it was the only car available at the time that weighed the exact amount for the infamous barrel roll jump to work.

The producers were not keen on it, but it was the only car that made the stunt possible...

In fact, into same movie had others AMC Cars:the Ambassadors of Thai Police(few credible, knowning they use Nissans and Toyotas, usually)and the Scaramanga's Matador Coupè,transformed in flying car(but the flying car into sky's far-framed scenes was only a RC-flying model car, into scenes of take off it was only a car with fake plane-alike- wings and turbofan-engine)

I'm sorry Thai Police in the movie were Matador Sedans, not Ambassadors

A 1974 Hornet X is featured in the James Bond movie; The Man with the Golden Gun. 007 commandeers the car from a makeshift Bangkok, Thailand AMC dealership to chase the bad guy. In the film, the Hornet was used to perform a spiral jump, just as the Astro Spiral Javelin stunt car performed that same jump in AMC sponsored thrill shows in the Houston Astrodome, wherein Gremlins and Hornets also were used to drive around in circles on their side two wheels in the arena. This Hornet stunt car is preserved in a James Bond museum with other famous James Bond cars.

The spiral jump was so complicated to perform that the ramps were designed with the help of Cornell University, who ran all the figures through a computer to come with the ideal design.

Very specifically, it's a matador red 1974 AMC Hornet X two door hatchback with a 360 V8 and a floor mounted automatic transmission. It's also got the dealer installed 14x6 inch Cragar S/S wheels and seemingly stock tires. I wouldn't be surprised it was fully equipped either, EON productions tend to buy top of the line cars for James Bond to drive.

THE GUY WHO DID THE STUNT WAS PART OF A STUNT SHOW THAT WENT AROUND TO COUNTY FAIRS. HE WAS SUPPOSED TO DO THE STUNT AT THE WAYNE COUNTY FAIR IN NC WHEN I WAS A KID, BUT HE HAD CRASHED A FEW DAYS BEFORE AND THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM AT THE WAYNE COUNTY FAIRGROUNDS. AT THE COUNTY FAIRS HE DID IT IN A JAVELIN WITH A 232. IN THE MOVIE, HE USED A SPECIALLY MODIFIED HORNET HATCHBACK. IN MY OPINION, THIS IS THE BEST CAR STUNT IN A MOVIE--EVER! THE ONLY ONE THAT COMES CLOSE IS THE ROCKET PROPELLED TRANS-AM IN HOOPER. MANY CAN ARGUE OTHERWISE, BUT THIS CAR KEPT ROLLING AFTER THE STUNT. MOST OF THE DUKE BOYS STUNTS ENDED IN THE TOTAL DEMOLISTION OF SOME PRECIOUS DETROIT IRON. I NEVER ATTEPMTED THIS STUNT, BUT I DID JUMP A RAILROAD TRACK AT 90 MILES PER HOUR IN MY 1978 CONCORD HATCHBACK WHICH IS A VERY SIMILAR CAR. THESE HATCHBACKS WERE WONDERFUL CARS.

The American Thrill Show was sponsered by AMC. They used Hornets, Javelins, Gremlins, and a few Pacer Sedans.

The question that is always asked is, "why is JW Pepper visiting a new car dealership while on vacation in Thailand?" It doesn't make the least bit of sense, but who cares. It's a Bond film.

Oh, it's a very simple reason: the movie was sponsored by AMC.
Just watch the whole final credits. There AMC is listed. too.

I realize that AMC paid to have their car in the movie. The point I'm making is that it makes no sense to shop for a new car when you're on an overseas vacation.

As I understand it, the stunt driver was offered a bonus if he could do the stunt in one take, which he did. Outstanding bit of showmanship!

Was this car considered good in its day or not?

Skid US

They were well-reviewed back in the day, as semi-sporty economy cars. Many people knock them now, though, just because the company that built them isn't around anymore, so it's easy to talk smack about them.

It's certainly a more fitting ride for James Bond than say, a Citroen 2CV or a Renault 11.

So they used 8 cameras, and in the movie the jump appears in one shot. Why did they need the other 7 cameras?

J.W. Pepper: [inspecting the car] How 'bout a demonstration, boy?

Bond: Certainly, sir.

[Bond drives the car straight through the showroom window]

It's called product placement. In 'Live and Let Die" Bond is chased across a New York bridge through a sea of nearly identical chevrolets.

According to the documentary on the film, the software that university used was the same software used by the US National Highway Safety Bureau for investigating and reconstructing single automobile accidents from all over the world.

There is a blue Holden saloon, about 1962, parked beyond the yellow Toyota? in the background.

White vehicles on the left: the minibus appears to be an early Ford Transit; the white saloon parked at the kerb is a Mercedes 220? about 1962. This film has an amazing variety of makes and models, and an intriguing mixture of LHD and RHD cars.
