Why? There were filmed movies. We already have several here, incl. one of my favourite movies: /movie.php?id=76544 |

There were American producers who filmed in South Africa because it was cheap and English-speaking, and who didn't care about the ethics of working there and were not affected by the cultural boycott because they used non-union actors and crew members. We have quite a few of those films, e.g. /movie.php?id=98046 According to the IMDB, this was a co-production with a South African company called United Talents (only active between 1988 and 1990 if the IMDB is to be believed.) The film servicing business in South Africa (as distinct from local film production) has grown substantially since the end of apartheid. Commercials and photoshoots are a much bigger part of it that feature films. |

I remember the hysteria of the left-winged teachers in my left-winged school back in the highly political times of the 80ies, when we had CAPE-apples or other fruits from RSA (in the groceries was always written "RSA", not "South Africa") in our sack lunch Not better were fruits from Chile. As typical for many West German schools back then we also had a "Nicaragua-shop", where bananas and coffee from the Sandinistas were offered. The coffee was a political affirmation, not a gusto. The nickname "Sandino Dröhnung" (= "Sandino kef") had a reason. |

Why not? Many didn't cared about the cultural boycott: https://youtu.be/fjxXFogAJdo |
