In the GDR not officially, except these Golf I, Citroen GS, Mazda 323 and Volvo 244 in 1977/78. There were some chances to get Western cars for GDR-citizens, but never regulary in a shop or by order. The reason was, that the GDR and the GDR-citiznes had worst money-problems. Theis DDR-Mark was worthless bullshit. Western money (resp.D-Mark) was hard to get. So the GDR-government has sold a lot of things, like - their best products (inside the GDR you only could buy B- and C-quality - antiques and artefacts (often stolen in museums and from private collectors by the government itself - streets. Yes. The material of old-style streets from the pre-war-time, mostly from the 17th and 18th century was digged out and sold to Western Germany - polital prisoners The West German government has paid a lot of money for everything, also Western tourists had to pay money, for example you had to change 25 D-Mark for every day of your stay in DDR-Mark - in 1:1. An totally ridiculous rate. 1:7 was realistic by the value. |

Thanks, Gag. But this day is not a reason to are in party-mood the whole time. Freedom and prosperty for the people behind the former wall, yes this is nice - but it may sound rude and bad, but for the future and developing of Western Germany (and for a plenty of the people over here) it would have been better, if the Wall would still exist. These ruins of the GDR-socialism ("ruins" in the material and the mental sense) cost us Germans an unbelievable amount of money - and it makes you really pissed, if you see the actial East German reality. Over 20% of the electors went to the former communist party, other 10-15% have neonazi-opinions. And the most of the people, who had relations to the GDR-state (teachers, police, military...) have worked as narks for the Stasi, the secret service. And then they are complaining about the way, we Western Germans are treating them. They have to shut up and be thankful until their end! Sorry, but I still have "the Wall in the head". Yes, and my own "Wall" was not eroding in the last 17 years. |

It's funny - the Soviet-released version of this film is censored. So the GDR is not the most totalitarian here. |
