1978 coming-of-age drama loosely based on the 1972 Gilcrest railroad crossing collision, where a train collided with a packed school bus after it's driver attempted to beat the train and the bus was almost completely torn in half by the collision with only the wall wrapped around the train holding the two ends together. The train was only going 40 mph per hour but the weight of the carriages behind Of the 48 high school students on the bus, three died on impact and two later succumbed to their injuries in the hospital :( The bus driver was charged with 5 counts of criminally negligent homicide and sentenced to five years probation. He died in 1998 and reportedly spent the rest of his life haunted by what he'd done.

The story of the film is about popular high school who is badly injured in the collision and struggles to put her life back together with the help of her family and boyfriend after the accident leaves her with brain damage and the amputation of a leg. A very inspiring movie. Instead of trying to beat the train, the collision occurs due to the bus stalling on the tracks.

A disclaimer before the titlecard states that the bus in the film is a different make and model than the one that was actually involved. The real-life bus was a GMC HM-Series.
