![]() 1977 made-for-TV drama film based on the true story of Karen Ann Quinlan, a young woman who unfortunately lapsed into a coma in 1975 after consuming Valium and alcohol while on a crash diet. She had suffered irreversible brain damage and her eyes no longer moved in the same direction. After being told she would likely neve recover, her parents had to fight tooth and nail to have her ventilator removed, as they felt that keeping her on a ventilator was prolonging her suffering. Even after the ventilator was removed, Karen remained breathing on her own. Sadly, she never woke up. She remained in a coma for ten years before ultimately dying of respiratory failure on June 11th, 1985 ![]() To this day, Karen's story continues to raise questions about moral theology, bioethics, euthanasia, legal guardianship and civil rights. Karen was played by Mary Jane Grayson. Karen's parents, Joseph and Julia Quinlan, are respectively played by Brian Keith and Piper Laurie. Quite the turnaround for Laurie who had played Margaret White in Carrie just the year prior. Airdate: September 26th, 1977 |
