This last week I have seen two movie which, without being period pieces, were car-less! One conte de Noël with an obvious political 'subtext', La nuit merveilleuse (Jean-Paul Paulin, december 1940) acted rather convincingly by Fernandel, Charles Vanel, Janine Darcey, Madeleine Robinson, etc. The other, Les pirates du rail (Christian-Jaque, january 1938), an action flick, full of China —shot on locations, partly!—, of horses and of trains. With Vanel, Jacques Dumesnil, Simone Renant and Suzy Prim. And Erich von Stroheim as a half-breed Chinese general! (Lucas Gridoux as Chinese general is worth to be seen, too!) What about this one? directed by Charles Brabant —completely forgotten as a movie director— is a well photographied (in Sicily) and well acted complete loss of time. The actors are not at fault: Madeleine Robinson and Dany Carrel are very good, … Magali Noël is hot, … and Raf Vallone is handsome. But the characters are over the top, just like the general situation, and most of the reactions are barely understandable, even (I guess) for the viewer of 1955. Bitter icing of the humble pie, the fifth character —played by Paul Faivre— passes through the film 4 or 5 times, always with its farming tractor, rather instrumental in the story… always seen from far away or with the camera on it! Aaaaaargh! Frus-tra-tion! -- Last edit: 2014-08-22 16:15:33 |
