This one won't ever count in the Jules Dassin's noir canon. It was released two years before The Naked City, and three before Thieves' Highway. And it's not a film noir at all.

But it's a tender comedy based on one Blanche Brace's noveL. And I found it very witty and funny—there are many very good comedic moments in the movie, from the beginning 'til the end.

And if the last minute looks contrived and code-Hollywood-complient (but could it end any other way?), the rest of this modestly budgetted movie is on par with any of the best writing and acting standards. It should be more seen and higher famed. (On this side of the Atlantic, I mean. I don't know about its reputation in the USA.)

Marsha Hunt, John Carroll ('Wolf' Larson), Hume Cronyn (John McPherson) are up to the task.

Et puis, tout de même, une photo de la délicieuse Marsha Hunt, ici avec Spring Byington…

… dans une des meilleures séquences d'un film qui ne manque vraiment pas de très bons et très intelligents moments.
