IMPDB

Set in Japan, Mongolia, and the fictional Balka; all non-Japanese scenes were filmed in Mongolia.

Backhoe and tractor that I'm not sure can ever be identified... I doubt the tractor is a John Deere in spite of the green fender.

They use Sükhbaatar Square in central Ulaanbataar as "Balka". I imagine that any Mongolian watching would laugh.

Not just Mongolians... I myself actually had a chuckle the moment I flipped open Google Earth (and Street View) not long after the offending episodes came out :p

In fact a lot of the Balkan scenes (and even a fictional airport in Japan!) are just reskinned Mongolian shots... usually Ulanbaatar... Although I guess I have to give credit for TBS for actually venturing out of the Tokyo area for once, much less Japan itself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Did they use Chinggis Khaan International Airport for the fictional Japanese airport? It was built by Japanese contractors and is managed by a Japanese-Mongolian joint venture.

That's my hunch... Although as someone who used to live an hour or so away from Hamamatsu was more weirded out at why a city of 700,000 has an airport when they have two other airports IRL that they can use (Shizuoka and Centrair), on top of the fact that they already have a JASDF airfield that they can easily open to civilian use if they ever need one... :p
It'd be like having an airport in Hoboken, NJ in spite of Newark and Teterboro :D
