Prequel to the Mystery Road TV series and films. Period not specified, but one scene has a 1998 calendar. No location info on imdb, but end credits mention Western Australia.

Slower paced than the "later" films and TV series, with flimsier and meandering storylines and not much in the way of dramatic shoot outs, but still absolutely riveting. Great cinematography and some wonderfully drawn characters - both major roles and bit parts - who keep you totally engrossed. So more social drama than tense thriller, but it still works magnificently.

Rejects:
- a blurry green estate I don't think I saw again

- the street scene for the town ball, with lots of shiny classic customs and US stuff behind, but not given proper views

although the green and dark red Aus Fords in front have pages

It was mentioned that the series was set in 1999 as the year was mentioned by a radio announcer speaking on the radio in Jay's 1973 Ford.

S2 (6 eps) set in a different part of Western Australia (very different forest scenery), Easter 2000 - 6 months after S1.

None of the plates I've tried so far work on the Western Australia website.

The number plates in the series were fakes because the producers of the series weren't allowed to use real Western Australia number plates.

Everything I've seen under the Mystery Road franchise has been excellent. This one changes tack - doesn't have the desolate spectacular panoramic landscapes, and is less of an Outback thriller. Instead has a claustrophobic plot which digs down much more deeply and powerfully than previously. Not a casual watch, but very worthwhile.
