When A Christmas Story became a cult hit, writer Jean Shepherd and director Bob Clark reunited to produce this sequel which is set the summer after A Christmas Story. Since the cast of the original had aged considerably (Peter Billingsley was already 12 when he played Ralphie), the entire Parker family was recast; Kieran Culkin as Ralphie, the late but great Charles Grodin as The Old Man, and Mary Steenburgen as Ms. Parker. The only actor from the first movie to reprise their role was Tedde Moore as Ralphie's teacher. Despite following on the heels of a beloved classic, this film only grossed $71'000 on a budget of $15 million, most likely because it was originally released as It Runs In The Family before MGM came to their senses and retitled it My Summer Story for the home video release. Also the family dog is played by Barkley, the same Jack Russel who played Ernest P. Worrell's dog, Rimshot. |
