This TV film was based on the murder of career criminal and "town bully", Ken Rex McElroy who was shot as he was sitting in his pickup truck with his wife on the main street at Skidmore in Nodaway County, Missouri on the morning of the 10th July 1981. Over the course of his life, McElroy had been charged 21 times for various offences but kept being acquitted. From late 1949 to late 1971, McElroy had been suspected of theft but managed to avoid criminal charges as he would intimidate witnesses either by sitting outside their houses or by following them. McElroy's criminal career took a dangerous turn in late 1971, when he got 14-year-old (and later his 4th and last wife), Trena McCloud pregnant and as a result, charged with statutory rape and later assault and arson after he shot the McCloud Family dog and burnt down the house of Trena's parents. By June 1973, he was charged with stalking and making threats after he told Trena's foster family that he would "trade girl for girl" to get his child back as he knew what bus route that foster family's biological daughter took and what school that she went to. He was later charged with the attempted murder of local farmer, Romaine Henry who was shot twice by McElroy at Henry's farm on the morning of the 27th July 1976, but was acquitted as two hunters testified that McElroy was with them shooting away from Henry's farm and under questioning by McElroy's lawyer, Henry admitted that he had a concealed petty criminal record from over 30 years earlier. The events that led to McElroy's murder was that on the 25th April 1980, a few of McElroy's children entered the local store owned by Ernest "Bo" Bowenkemp and his wife, Lois and got into an argument with the store clerk, Evelyn Sumy after one of the children allegedly stole candy, after McElroy's children left, McElroy started to stalk the Bowenkemp family and on the 29th May 1980, McElroy fired shots in the air outside the Bowenkemp family house and then on the evening of 8th July 1980, McElroy went into Bowenkemp's store and shot him. Bowenkemp survived while McElroy was charged and convicted of assault and was freed on bail while awaiting appeal. After his release, McElroy went to a local bar, the D&G Tavern with a M1 Garand Rifle with a fixed bayonette where he made threats about what he like to do to Bowenkemp, after hearing this, several of the patrons asked the local sheriff, Dan Estes if they could do anything legally, the Sheriff Estes suggested forming a neighbourhood watch group. On the day of his murder; the 10th July 1981, McElroy and Trena went to the tavern for a while, before leaving the tavern, he purchased a six pack of beer. As McElroy and Trena got into his truck, McElroy was then shot at several times and then twice with two rifles. Despite McElroy's murder had occurred in front of 46 witnesses, no one could identified the gunman or gunmen or called an ambulance. Three years after McElroy's murder on the 9th July 1984, Trena filed a wrongful death lawsuit for $6 million against the Town of Skidmore, the Mayor of Skidmore, Steve Peters, Nodaway County Sheriff Estes and the alleged shooter, Del Clements, the suit was settled out of court for $17,600 with the reason being to avoid the cost of legal fees if the suit would proceed. Trena McElroy remarried and left Skidmore and move to Lebanon, Missouri, she later died of cancer on her 55th birthday on the 24th January 2012. -- Last edit: 2023-01-13 05:48:19 |
