Bleak and very atmospheric 1982 mini-series (3 episodes) set in Belfast but mostly filmed in Leeds by Yorkshire Television; strong links with /movie_77078-The-Sandbaggers.html as the same production team and shared lead actor, plus similar style. Famous at the time with a memorable finale and distinctive theme tune by Clannad - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUiu-JztpKE . Many vehicles have NI plates, but these are usually fake for Yorkshire locations.

This miniseries featured a poem written by the daughter of William Staunton; a British Catholic who was murdered by the IRA in 1973.

Staunton was a British resident magistrate based in Northern Ireland who was shot after dropping of his daughter and her friends by two IRA members on a motorcycle outside the St. Dominick's Convent Grammar School on Falls Road in Belfast on the morning of the 11th October 1972.

He later died of his wounds in Royal Victoria Hospital on the 25th January 1973.

Staunton was the first in a series of magistrates attacked or killed by IRA in Belfast during the 1970s and the 1980s, these were:

Rory Conaghan- Shot at his home on Malone Road in the Beechlands area of Belfast by a IRA hitman posing as a postman in the early morning of the 16th September 1974.

Robert "Martin" McBirney- Shot at his home on Belmont Road in East Belfast the same morning as Judge Conaghan.

William Doyle- Shot as he leaving the St. Brigid's Church on Derryvolgie Avenue in Belfast on the morning of the 16th January 1983.

An elderly lady who was with Doyle was also shot but survived.

Tom Travers- Shot by IRA member; Joseph Haughey and a unknown accomplice as he was leaving the St. Brigid's Church (the same church where Doyle was murdered a year earlier) with his family on the morning of the 8th April 1984.

Judge Travers survived the shooting but his daughter; Mary was killed when one round went into her back.

Maurice Gibson- Blown up by remote controlled car bomb near Killean; just over the Republic of Ireland-United Kingdom Border (or the Irish Border) as he and his wife; Lady Cecily was driving back to Belfast on the afternoon of the 27th April 1987.

Lady Cecily was also killed.

It was suspected that officers within the Garda Siochana who escorted Magistrate Gibson and his wife to the Irish Border were on the IRA's payroll and they tipped off the IRA to where the car with Gibson and his wife was.

The RAF jet featured for the secret flight was not a VC10 but is the RAF Comet XK655 on display at Duxford.
