The decay is authentic, as it's one of the most backward regions in West Germany, although it's not really far away from the prosperous Volkswagen-Country around Wolfsburg and Gamer-town.
Advantageous, if you want to buy a house. The property-prices there are some of the lowest in Germany (and so in Middle Europe).
