Another little trivia bit about 'Wild' Bill Hickman (driver of the Bullitt Charger) was that he was in the car (station wagon) behind James Dean's Porsche on that fateful day (Sept. 30,1955) and pulled James out of the wrecked car. Before the trip he asked Jimmy if he wanted him to drive the Porsche and James refused. Bill passed away in 1986 at age 65.

"Another little trivia bit - the sound of the Mustang was dubbed from that of a GT40...."

Only during the high speed scenes. You can hear the Stang's real exhaust sound during the cat and mouse leading up to the chase and during other scenes in the movie where he's just cruising around. It sounded pretty good on it's own without the dubbing!

In this overview I'm missing the green VW Beetle that's right in the middle of the chase scene, when both cars are going down the hill. Because the chase scene is edited in such way, that all the different camera shots together make the chase seem much longer than it actually was, this green beetle is seen passing through the scene 3 times in 3 different camera viewpoints and at 3 different moments in the chase scene

I'm sure that during the chase-scene, he changes up seven times - must watch that movie again I think.... The driver of the Charger during the chase was (at the time) a real racing-driver and not an actor, unfortunately his name escapes me right now though a quick google will no doubt reveal it.

Did you know that Ford (UK) during the mid 60's built a Transit van onto the 'chassis' of a GT40? Later versions had a mid-engined Ford-Cosworth DFV F1 engine, and the latest has a 2.0 litre engine from the Ford Focus.... Come on Ford, if you're going to make a display van, do something serious, that thing was beaten on the track by a standard French car!

There's an Aston Martin DBS on the right in the Hotel Approach when Rennick goes to pick up his 'message'. There's some other nice expensive machinery in there too, I think there's an E-Type obscured by the railings.

I'm new to the IMCDB. It looks great and I have already enjoyed looking at so many different movie cars. Regarding Bullitt, one of the greatest car chase movies ever made, there is an interesting site about the filming locations, made by Mr. Ray Smith. (http://www.rjsmith.com/bullitt-locations.html) I'm sure many of you already know about this site, but if you have not been to this site, please do. You will enjoy it.

That green Beetle should get a 2 star since it kept popping up, wasn't it a camera mans car aswell? Kinda coincedental since a camera man for Top Gear used an old bug for their Africa trip and he was the one that had minimal trouble.

There is another Valiant very early in the movie. Just after the Taxi leaves the hotel, and the street-car goes down the hill, a white 1962 2-door is seen parked on the side of the street. I'm sure it's a 1962 because of the round tail lights. 1960 and 1961 Valiants had oval tail lights set into the "fins" that projected out of the rear fenders.

*************************************************************

I noticed the continual double-shifting too, in the high speed sequence; the wonderful \"bah, bah\". It only took me about 20 yrs to figure out that the balkier, four speed trannies of the day required doubling UP as well as doubling down. What we are hearing is his doubling down and then up, as he enters and leaves the curves.

I would be interested in knowing the source of the GT 40 dubbing assertions. I\'ve never heard that before. I shouldn\'t think that the GT 40 would be straining through the gears, nor that it would require double-upshifting.

BTW, the driver of the Charger was Bill Hickman, famous for this and the \"French Connection\" and, I believe \"The Seven Ups\" (where the engine sounds from \"Bullitt\" were dubbed, for an AUTO transmission Pontiac!!!!) Hickman was first on the scene when his friend James Dean died on the road on his way to race his Porsche. Hickman was coaching his driving, and was following with a pick-up and trailer. Dean literally died in his arms.

As for all this talk about beefing up the \'Stang so that the Charger didn\'t run away from it: isn\'t it more likely, and less expensive, to tell the driver of the Charger to just slow down a touch?

Ekins was a Triumph dealer, set up Steve\'s bikes for the Baja 500, and was on the same team as McQueen. My understanding was that the only driving Bud Ekins did was in the hill jumping sequences. Reinforcing this belief is the fact that you can actually see McQueen (both on the interior and exterior cameras) for nearly all of the shots. BTW, this was the first time they shot a high-speed chase through the windshield. When I saw it on its release, the scenes on the hills where the level intersections filled the screen to be violently replaced with sky and bay and then crashing down again, people were getting car-sick across the nation.

My wife and I were living in SanFrancisco in 1968-69 when Bullit premiered. We went to Coyote Point to a drive in movie theater to see Bullit. The
theater is located at the south end of SFO airport. So while we viewed the flick, real planes were landing and taking off, with scenes from the flick
just like where we were parked! After I was discharged from the Army in 1970, we picked up a new Dodge Charger in Detroit, drove it out to California. I now drive a green Mustang, just a few decades newer than the movie Mustang!

This movie's chase scene is amazing. It's a 1968 movie, and its chase is better than most of new ones. They only had one camera car, a modified Corvette, and McQueen drived in some of the scenes (just like in Le Mans). This is probably the most famous chase ever, and one of the best.
