Quote Set in the Haiti of "Papa Doc" Duvalier, The Comedians tells the story of a sardonic white hotel owner and his encroaching fatalism as he watches Haiti sink into barbarism. Complications include a friendship with a rebel leader, politically "charged" hotel guests, an affair with the wife of a European ambassador, and the manipulations of a conniving British arms dealer.

Based on Graham Greene novel, this film about Duvalier's dictature indeed couldn't been played in Haïti, then they did in Dahomey(Benin nowadays) and south of France.

Good actors, and actress Liz Taylor

About the black Buicks convertibles there were three used for this movie: not only the hereby mentioned '62 Electra 225 convertible, but a very similer '62 Invicta (three portholes, instead of four) and a '64 Skylark convertible seen here in the last group of the smaller pictures offered if You click the Electra...

Great catch, Electra225....that explains your username / handle! I've seen this film a few times, and did catch the '62 Electra convertible driving along the dirt road that is suddenly a '64 Skylark convertible when it turns up at the hotel....but wasn't paying attention to the switch from Electra to Invicta! I need to watch that scene again. I am sure the scenes with the 1962 Buicks would have been filmed in Benin / Dahomey, while the Skylark looks to have pulled up to a hotel actually located in Nice, doubling for the nicer sections of Port-Au-Prince. A poignant film as one would expect from a Graham Greene novel, and magnificent cast (Peter Ustinov, Alec Guinness, Paul Ford, and Lilian Gish...wow! Not a big Liz and Dick fan, but still, amazing wattage from this star power cast of legends!) And the few cars depicted really embody some classic 1960s transport.
