Note that in Paint Shop Pro (and probably others) it is easier, you do not have to cut/paste: select an area, invert the selection (so everything except that area is selected), then the brighness/contrast change is only applied to that part.

I don't really think it's acceptable in the sense that these are genuine screenshots of great films, they ruin the pictures.
