In some scenes government minister Hugh Abbot (Chris Langham) and his assistants are riding around in a ministerial car to get to public visits. They film the actors in the back seat of a stretched Volvo, but when they get out the car a completely different car appears behind them. In episode 1.1 Abbot is driven around in a Rover 75, for an in-car scene we see the front dashboard of the Rover in the first shot, then it switches to the back seat of a Volvo. When they get out the car for a quick stop, we see the exterior of the Rover again. In episode 1.4 Abbot goes to visit a care centre, and we see a Jaguar pull up with him inside, then it switches to the inside of a Volvo. Then on the outside we see someone open the door of a Volvo stretched limousine and he gets out. Then once he is out of the car behind him we can see the Jaguar again. Often, to get back seat shots, film makers will use half shell cars to get the camera in, epecially when using bulky 35mm equipment (although this show was shot on video). Maybe the Volvo was prepared this way as a specialist generic car interiors vehicle, sitting on a trailer. Or maybe all the interiors were shot on the same day and the continuity lady was ill. |

IIRC, the car interiors were filmed while driving on the road, so they can't have used a half shell. A stretched limousine would provide more space for the crew than a normal car, though. |

They clearly used a stretched Volvo, so there would be more room in the back. By the way the entire series was shot on handheld cameras (the camera is always jumping around all over the place), which must be smaller than proper cinematic cameras. And it was definetely filmed driving down a real road, not in front of a bluescreen (which often doesn't look realistic). I just don't know why they used a Rover and a Jaguar for exterior shots. When you see the rectangular rear windows and the boxy outline of the interior, it's obvious it's not a Rover 75. What's really strange is in the scene where the Jaguar pulls up, you actually see the outside of the Volvo in the next shot, then it changes back to the Jag. Sometimes people film scenes with actors in the back seats of real, ordinary cars, but because there is less space, the camera probably can't fit everyone sitting on the back seat in the same shot, so usually they do closeups of the actors faces and upper bodies. -- Last edit: 2007-11-19 23:14:20 |
