It's the genuine film of 1940, whose a remake has been made in 1988 (it has a page on Imcdb).. It's a very good in the best tradition of "film noir"

Unfortunately, the quality of this DVD is not very good, even worse than some older movies of the 30's...

There is no doubt on the location of some scenes :)

I know what you mean. I have a bunch of these old movies that are unrestored and the quality is not good in any of them. :(

Yes, I agree. I get the Turner Classic Movies channel. They show a lot of old movies and the quality is generally as good as the dvds that I have. I now have a tv capture card and some of my more recent postings have been obtained that way.

Note that for these non-very-sharp DVDs it is sometimes better to reduce a little the picture size, e.g. 640x480. As there aren't much details in the original images, you do not lose anything, and the images looks less blurred (and by the way it allows to have picture height below the 500 pixels as I recommend - though that nobody follows that :o)
Another thing, some of the pictures seem interlaced. It is strange that the DVD-program did not fix that, but in most of the image programs you can deinterlace picture.
e.g. /images/088/265.jpg becomes http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/3778/image1lr9.jpg

It's supposed to happen in Banning but there are no out-door shootings there. The second half of the movie is set in Los Angeles, with a lot of (mainly at night) out-door filming.

Antoine, other administrators, I'm beginning to replace the pics, beginning at /vehicle_88267-De-Soto-Taxicab-1946.html and I'd be glad to be said whether it's clear enough, not to big, etc.

All right. It was Rudolph Maté's
[Image: vlcsnap-2015-03-01-04h22m25s187.jpg]

… in which even Edmond O'Brien
[Image: vlcsnap-2015-03-01-15h10m47s99.jpg]
has his moments of exhaustion, especially when encountering Chester the crazy killer
[Image: vlcsnap-2015-03-01-16h42m24s87.jpg]
(the hilariously 'frightening' Neville Brand).

The movie has maybe three good moments (the opening, the killing in th drugstore, the chase in LA night) but they tally for about three minutes. Rest: 80 other minutes.

Bah.

Time-tagged and replaced pictures (I had a much better copy than sixcyl's) and 5 additions. Too bad I couldn't pick more, there were interestng trucks, but blurred even on my copy.
