2491tj ◊ 2008-01-29 17:51	see the various vehicle comments for recently added info..in addition two BMW combos were supplied to the film. the boat used as Mandras boat was built for the film from 2 wrecks..the crew tried buying original boats but the owners who had modernised them, wanted too much money..so they got 2 wrecks and built 1 useable boat from them. The airborne attack scenes were added by CGI as no planes of suitable type were available. the two Italian Minesweepers are actually "in service" Greek Navy mine sweepers, filmed head on so it dosent show modern superstructures..the same ships are used in the background German invasion scenes,and landing ships were repainted and used as German/Italian when needed. The ferry used as the Greeks go off to war was a water container ship which was literally rebuilt for the film as a ferry. the mandolins..two were used in the film (originally one was going to be buried in the earthquake) are genuine antiques,supplied from a dealer in Rome..the one played by Nic Cage had to have its neck strengthened so that it could cope with tough modern strings and was tuned to the right pitch..even if after filming, the sound was dubbed on !!!!. the town of Argostoli in the film was entirely a prop set..it was constructed near Sami using 53,000 meters of scaffold tube, 46,000 scaffold fittings, 1,000,000 screws, 750 kilogrammes of nails, 5,000 sheets of ply, 75,000 meters of timber, 180 tons of plaster, 150 tons of concrete,1,750 gallons of paint.2,000 real plants were planted in the fake town...after filming, some buisnessmen attempted to buy the set in order to rebuild it on land near Sami as a tourist attraction, but it never came off...one local postcard company produced "Old Argostoli" picture postcards, without including that it was only a film set and it would only be in situ a few weeks..tourists to the area will be buying these postacrds in years to come, not knowing the image is a set, not the genuine old town!!. Most of the Italian Officers uniforms are original WW2..being supplied from costumiers in Italy, all other Italian uniforms were made for the film, the specific unit insignia was also specially made, Italian costumiers had many Italian uniforms in stock, but none could be adapted for the specific uniforms in the film..other Italian kit, hats etc were supplied from Italian dealers. the german uniforms were a problem, as ,at the time this film was being made, "Band Of Brothers" and "Enemy At The Gates" were also in production and there were no large scale stocks of WW2 german uniforms for hire, as both BOB and Gates had aquired most of which were available...as a result, all the German uniforms in Mandolin had to be made from scratch. All the "new" Italian and German uniforms were "aged" by a process which included sandpapering, spraying with glycerine to Matt down the fur, rubbing in Fullers Earth,spraying in dye, blow torching to take off the pile. Civillian clothes were hired from costumiers in Rome, Paris,Berlin and London. All the period furniture had to be brought in from mainland Greece and shops in Athens and Piraeus, there were no period pre war furniture available near the filming site (on Cephallonia) as the 1953 earthquake had destroyed much of what was there. The Italian tents were replicas made in England as none were available, more than 1,000 Italian wooden ammo boxes were found but were modern and were used as set dressing,all the paperwork, posters, books,newspapers, playing cards etc were either specially printed or sourced from dealers. 10,000 sandbags were sourced, 1,200 meters of canvas was dyed to order and made into 27 replica tents, 3,000 tent pegs were used, 1,000 modern Italian Army wooden ammo boxes were imported from Italy,320 tons of rubble were brought in to recreate bombed Argostoli . When the prop church gets destroyed by the earthquake in the film, all the church interior fittings are from the original church destroyed in the real 1953 earthquake..the film crew found the decaying remains of the churches interior in a pig farmers barn.....the original church had stood within the boundary of his familys land and after the earthquake when the church was decommissioned, his family stripped it and hung on to the furniture. Nic Cage learned how to play the Mandolin, and does play the tunes in the filming...but what you hear,as a viewer, has been dubbed on after filming!!. Originally it was planned to film on 2 locations,Corfu and Sami (Cephalonia)....using Corfu Town as Argostoli and Sami as Argostoli waterfront..but changed their minds as Corfu had too many modern signs and buildings and it would be too expensive to hide them. Instead, Sami(Cephalonia) was chosen and because there are few pre 1953 earthquake buildings a complete fake town of Argostoli was created, with a town square set built in such a way as to hide modern buildings. When Nic Cage does interviews to promote various movies, one thing his "people" tell you is not to look at his receeding hairline..if they catch you doing it, interviews are immediately suspended!!!!!!..most of the vehicles were supplied from the Steve Lamonby collection in the UK..hes the man most movie makers approach if they want wartime vehicles supplied to these european made movies..hes the modern version of Charlie Mann and Tony Oliver.. long established UK collectors,who supplied vehicles for the classic 1960s/70s war movies such as Bridge Too Far/dirty dozen etc, and 1980s movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark. -- Last edit: 2008-02-12 00:18:19

nope..just lifted some info from the book "captain corellis mandolin,the illustrated film companion"..just found a copy in a library ex stock sale..the "making of" book is actually better than the film was!!!..the "receeding hairline" bit i took from an english newspaper report,26 Jan..he is/was in the UK to promote his recent film..and thats what perspective interviewers are told beforehand!!!!!
