13-minute RAF film about its adventures in Aden - building an airstrip in the middle of nowhere and defending it against horrid locals. Taken from
[Image: covercompressedx3.jpg]
COI Collection Volume 3: They Stand Ready. Full of the usual stuff about defending freedom etc, but all looks very dated imperialism today as we tried to cling on to a rapidly disappearing Empire. The essay in the DVD booklet describes the film as an excuse for the RAF to show off its range of toys, so it's full of planes and other stuff - which also begins to raise the question of how in the austerity 50s and early 60s, UK could actually afford the huge expense of actively maintaining these outposts around the world.

Can be seen here or here.

Happy coincidence - I've just discovered a list of RAF Vehicle Registration Numbers - useful for this film and worth noting for wider reference. However it has gaps when compared to some plates here so is not a magic bullet. It doesn't open an onscreen page, but is an automatic download which can then be opened as a Word document - www.mafva.net/other%20pages/VRNRAF[1].doc

It just so happens that there's an upcoming BBC drama series set in Aden in 1965, titled ""The Last Post"".
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5133742/combined
Quote The Last Post is a 6 part returning drama series, created by Peter Moffat for BBC1, which will film from October 2016 – March 2017 and is due to transmit in 2017. The series will be directed by Jonny Campbell and Miranda Bowen.

The drama is set in Aden in 1965 at the fag-end of The British Empire. This is the story of a British army unit fighting a terrorist insurgency in the Middle East and the women and children who were there with them.

Danger, heat, glamour – grenade attacks, roadside mines, sniper actions, gin and tonic, polka dot bikini’s and fish and chips at the BP beach club, Strangers in the Night, death in the desert, drinking and smoking like there’s no tomorrow, frying eggs on the bonnets of Land Rovers, the politics of occupier and occupied, love and war a long way from home.

The series is an up-close look at soldiering and police work but it’s as much about the pressures and excitements of being married to the British army in a dangerous place at a moment in history when sex and feminism arrive in the twentieth century, the sun is going down on the empire and the established order of the 1950’s is disappearing.

The show is partly based on Peter Moffat’s childhood memories, his father’s life as an officer in the Royal Military Police and his mother’s struggle between being what the army required her to be and being the person she wanted to be.
