dsl ◊ 2013-03-15 03:24	Wonderfully photographed 45 minute documentary filmed in 2005 but not properly released until 2012 of the Lea Valley area of East London just before development started to turn it into the Olympic village for London 2012. First half is very atmospheric footage of dereliction and abandonment - almost Chernobyl-like; most of the pictures come from second half which is uglier imagery of scrappies etc. Music by St Etienne. Mervyn Day was a West Ham goalkeeper (the local team for the area) in late 70s - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mervyn_Day - but is not part of the film. Lots of photos of the old vanished industrial heritage and other oddities: Fatboys Diner at Trinity Buoy Wharf - unless there are loads of these huts, I think it has been used as a location in a few of our films. Sharp cassette player in Fatboys. PS Waverley on the Thames, normally found on the Clyde doing trips from Glasgow - the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS_Waverley . Any bones worth picking from these shots? (1st car may be a Laguna estate; 2nd is the Space Wagon, 3rd the Rover 800 - both with entries) -- Last edit: 2013-03-15 14:08:00

There's some commentary in the film that in late 19th century the area had several match factories, so Matchbox was also honouring a local tradition with its name and the slogan about the models fitting into one. Working conditions in the match factories were so bad due to the constant exposure to phosphorous, that the workforce of match girls went on a bitter strike and formed a trade union. This became a major dispute, and one of the outcomes was the election for the area of Britain's first socialist MP, Keir Hardie - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keir_Hardie - which led to the foundation of the Labour Party (which "Son-of-Thatcher" Blair transformed into today's right-of-centre imitation Conservatives).
