This is because director Stanley Kubrick had a fear of flying, and preferred to work in England which had been his home for years. There are some shots of the real New York but these were done by a second unit. If you look closely you'll notice the same building fronts reappearing in various scenes, and the same cars driving through the streets. They must have brought in American cars to create the traffic and cars parked in the streets, they also use cars that are available in both America and Britain, such as Jeep Cherokees, Chrysler Neons, Mercedes, BMWs and Volkswagens. -- Last edit: 2012-01-21 19:29:53 |

Given Kubrick's obsessive attention to detail (before he made this film he employed a photographer to spend a year taking pictures of shop fronts and streets in London) I wonder how much he had to with the selection of cars that appear on the New York streets (actually mostly studio sets in England)  If you watch the film closely you can see some cars appearing several times. -- Last edit: 2012-01-21 19:37:31 |

Added more vehicles and uploaded the old ones with HD pictures. In many street scenes of this movie, the cars are just repeating. |

Even if the HD images were better quality, it's still preferable to keep entries with 4:3 images if they show more of the car than being cut off in the widescreen version. |

I remember seeing this film in the theatre as I adore Kubrick's work, and I have always had a facination of British studios filming American scene with American (or common in America) vehicles. Looking at these thumbnails, my guess is that cars like the '84 Fifth Avenue, the '87 Caprice Estate, and possibly the two Pontiac Grand Am cars were ex-embassy cars or sold locally by US service personnel returning home. And, yes, I remember Chrysler had a small presence in the UK and on the continent with a bigger push during the 1990s with vehicles like the Neon and the Cherokee. I think that the Eagle Vision was the cabforward design that was sold in the UK / on the continent as the "Chrysler Vision", so not sure what the Dodge Interprid's history may have been. Again, may have been ex-embassy. I'm sure that if a classic New York cab couldn't have been located in the UK, one (or how many were actually used) could be acquired stateside and then rehired for future film and TV work there. The 1976 Seville is a good inclusion as a background vehicle and would be slightly more accessible.....as some were sold in the UK from new. I know that one makes two appearances in Octopussy with a prominent "USA" Country of Origin sticker on its boot/trunk lid. I suspect that Kubrick has some say on the vehicles that appeared due to his exquisite attention to detail, although certain modifications to comply with local regulations might be obvious to the keen-eyed viewer. I do remember how the Interstate signs that were made for Dr Harford's trip out to Long Island in his Range Rover looked distinctly fake. |
