It didn't deserve that sad explosive fate at the end of the chase I heard this story that since United Artists picked the BMW instead of a Mercedesfor Goldenye, this chase was made out of revenge. The Bimmers were not only trashed by the Benz, but the Mercedes was shown to be very reliable, while the BMWs were very unreliable.
