Set between 1995 and 2004 and based on real life events known as the Melbourne Gangland War in Melbourne, Victoria. Over thirty gangters, and their associates, as well as potential witnesses were murdered. Some of the crimes are still unsolved, and some of the cases are still before the courts, meaning the Series could not be aired in Victoria, although most Victorians who wanted to see it have seen it anyway. Filmed at as many of the original locations as possible. My wife's boss actually lived in the house where one of the gangsters was killed. Second series is actually titled "Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities" and is set prior to the original series. In New Zealand the second series is known as "Underbelly: The Mr Asia Story", after one of the main characters, New Zealand drug dealer Terry Clark, known as Mr Asia. While it is listed on IMDB as the second series, it is really a stand alone series based on the concept of the first, ie a dramatised recreation of actual events, albeit with quite a bit of creative licence.
