A rather special Junkers Ju 52/3m (cn 130714) with the official registration D-CDLH and the painted registration D-AQUI (for the film changed to D-AQUL). The original Ju 52/3m ge D-AQUI "Fritz Simon" (WNr. 5489) was bought by the Lufthansa in 1935, was later sold to the Norwegian D.N.L. and registered as LN-DAH, transferred back to Lufthansa service during the war (D-AQUI), back to Norway after the war (now LN-KAF), and served until 1956. In 1947 a mayor overhaul was due and parts of this machine plus the body from a 1943 Ju 52/3m g8e (a float-plane) and the right wing from a Ju 52/3m g6e plus numerous parts from other salvaged Ju 52 were used. After 1956 it was sold to Ecuador, registered HC-ABS "Amazonas", and served until 1963. In 1970 it was sold to the USA, overhauled and registered N130LW. During a revision in 1976 new Pratt & Whitney "Wasp" engines and the undercarriage of a Curtiss C-46 were installed. As N52JU "Iron Annie" it flew until 1984, when the Lufthansa bought it for their 60th anniversary. It actually flew over the Atlantic and was thereafter rebuilt by the Lufthansa and now serves since 1986 with the painted registration D-AQUI "Berlin-Tempelhof". Today it uses three blade propellers as they are less noisy than the original two-blade ones ... still it is not a very silent plane but a pleasure to see it flying!

And it's a pleasure to take a flight with it. Some years ago I got a flight with D-AQUI as a birthday-present - fascinating.
