A great find. First time I ever ventured into the Highlands was May 79, hitch-hiking from Birmingham to Orkney during much of this construction, so a memorable trip on a mixture of the old and new stretches. Had one long lift in an ex-Army Bedford - slow but fantastic because the driver said I could stand on the transmission tunnel and look out of the roof hatch all the way through the mountains. If I was given a penny for every time I've been up or down the A9 since, I could afford a small bottle of Highland Park, although probably only the poverty 12 year old ... Now one of the roads in Scotland (and maybe UK) with the highest accident rate in the summer - desperately needs full dual carriageway between Perth and Inverness, which is promised over the next few years. However it is still a stunning trip through some amazing scenery. |

I second the brilliant find comment. Great stuff JCB, even though as a lalland Scot I generally disapprove of the highlands it provides a great insight into seventies/eighties road traffic. |

 Why that? Very odd, this fact. Maybe it's the most frequented Scottish road besides the Edinburgh Bypass? We drove the A9 several times and for us it was quite relaxing to drive. A quite wide road, no sharp or hidden curves, no ugly hills, and the several four-lane-sections makes you relaxing, because you know, that sooner or later you have the chance to pass. It's indeed even rather boring, compared with many other country roads in the Highlands. The A82 between Inverness and Fort Augustus is much uglier to drive. Narrow, curvy, mostly hidden from view, plus a plenty of dashing buses on the way to Nessie - a bad combination with creeping tourist-cars (also on the hunt for Nessie) and hyper-active local delivery- and craftsmens in their Sprinters (the Bedford CF-times are gone). At least it's much nicer and relaxing to drive all over Scotland (Britain generally, too), than in Germany. Too overcrowded here, too many dumbasses and aggressive wankers here. It's not nice  In Britain -especially Scotland!- the drivers are much friendlier and regardfuller than here. |

Too much mixed summer traffic which wants to go at different speeds from 30-80mph - heavy lorries, bikers, coaches, caravans, foreign tourists (they make up a high proportion of the fatalities), cars, vans, tractors - all crammed onto one road with long convoys building up behind something slow. Summer Saturdays are particularly bad as all the Highland holiday lets (chalets, cottages, resorts) change so everyone's leaving or arriving. Plus too many minor turns with unsafe junctions onto the A9. Most of the accidents are overtaking collisions or something doing 70-80mph hitting something which has turned onto the A9 and has not picked up speed or has slowed to turn off. But when the traffic is light it is a superb drive, and as you say much easier than the A82. |
